I firmly believe that physical retail stores still have a place in the modern retail mix. Everyone seems to be talking about making retail an “experience” and whilst I don’t disagree with that I also don’t think that’s anything new. Successful shops have always done that - creating an environment that induces you to buy the products they display. Ecommerce has changed the UK retail landscape - certainly more extensively and quicker than in many other countries. I think that’s down to the relatively low threshold for a positive consumer experience. Online retailers didn’t have to do much to offer a better retail experience than you’d get in most shops.

So what should you be doing if you are a physical retailer. In my opinion you’ve got to play to your strengths - both your personality and that of the building/location of your shop. Ditch the generic branded point of sale supplied by the brands you stock. They are a one size fits none solution and do nothing to make your store unique. Get your store reflecting your style whether that’s minamilist and white or antique/retro - just make it something memorable for the customers that do walk through your doors.

It takes hard work - being different does - but it doesn’t need to have a ridiculous budget. Get creative with materials you might already have. Buy second hand or antique items. Bring in materials from other sectors that can serve the purpose you need.

If you need a hand with this, or a push to get you started, get in touch and we can discuss a “Retail Refresh” package that works for you.

The display above was built using reclaimed scaffold boards and 2x4 timber for less than £40.

The transformation get be quite drastic. Three days work and around £600 worth of Ikea display units to achieve the look this garden centre wanted.

The same logic can be applied to trade shows as well. Less than £100 worth of materials to get a unique looking display stand.

That can still fit into the back of an estate car and be built up and knocked down single handed.
